Journalism is again setting a high standard

Since Sunday morning, everywhere I turn in the news, I am assaulted with the story that two NFL cheerleaders allegedly had sex with each other in the bathroom of a Tampa Bay, FL bar. Folks, please don’t fall for this. This is sensationalist journalism at it’s worst. It is a story the mainstream media can pick up on with feeling like they aren’t being tabloid like, but that is exactly what they are doing. WNYW, the Fox affiliate in New York City used the story to fill an entire newsblurb during their Sunday night programming.

Why does this anger me so much? Why do I think this is in poor taste? Have you seen the other news stories currently breaking? Riots in France, a report saying the evidence for the war in Iraq was “intentionally misleading”, Grokster was shut down by the movie and record companies, the death toll in the Asian Earthquake rises to 87,350 and on and on and on. Yet, everywhere you go, you see the story of what really amounts to a disorderly conduct charges is making national news because it is sensational.

It’s amazing how the media constantly amazes me with their bad choices. You would think I would be used to it by now.
