I miss Aaron Brown. His was the last watchable CNN show, IMHO. If anyone could have gained people's trust as a newsman like Cronkite did for a generation, Brown was it. So, naturally, they canned him.

Roy - Like I have ever been one to not want to discuss differences between the USA and Japan. I agree, Cooper IS about the only watchable thing on CNN right now. You hit the nail on the head though, we're alllllllll about the talking heads. I had a friend that worked in the news department of the NYC offices of the FX Networks. One night he and I are out at a bar in NYC and I asked him about the talking heads and how they get picked. His reply "Whoever lives the closest or has the faster car to get to the studio when we need them." Mind you, this was about 10 years ago, so imagine how much worse it's gotten.

And I like Japanese news, you're right, they are much more about the visuals.

Luis - Oh yeah, I'm totally aware this is not new, (OJ Simpson trial is where I think it all spiraled out of control) but the ANS story is just what made me finally snap. This story doesn't deserve any more than the ticker at the bottom of the screen.

I get up at 8:30, leave for work at 9:15, it's just not practical for me to jump on my lap top and do the news in the morning. All I want is a simple "Here's the top stories this morning"...10 minutes of a judge who can't sit properly in a chair, and is obviously hamming for the camera, is not "Headline News".

But yeah, otherwise I spend a lot of time on news sites at work.

Sean, you should just vent your frustration by throwing a brick at your TV ;-)

Everyone knows that CNN is garbage, especially when they have the likes of Lou Dobbs and Larry King. Although I can watch Anderson Cooper sometimes.

If you'll allow me make a comparison to Japanese "news" media (even though your blog isn't really about Japan) I've always thought that Japanese people respond more to visual images rather than rhetoric which is what I dislike the most about American News, there's too much talking. Whenever there's breaking news they always have all kinds of "experts" being interviewed. Not that Japanese news is any better but usually Japanese news shows more footage which at least let's the viewer form their own opinion, sort of. On the other hand, they do have panels of talento that discuss news items on those wide shows. The panels usually consist of 4 or 5 TV personalities representing different demographics and they react to the news so average people can feel that their reactions/opinions are "normal" or whatever. These shows are equally as obnoxious.

You are aware that this is not a new phenomenon with the Anna Nichole Smith story, right? I'm pretty sure you are, and I'm guessing that this is the one that sends you over the edge to react strongly. Me, I just kind of accepted the idiotic practice long ago as yet another sign of the degradation of the established TV news media--which is another reason why I rarely watch CNN anymore, instead using Google News as my primary news source, supplemented by blogs and other various sites.
