POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

Written by Sean P Aune  |  under Music

EMI RECORDS AND APPLE JOIN FORCES FOR DRM FREE MUSIC!

Take that RIAA!

Songs will still be $.99 for 128 kbps, and with DRM. DRM free will be $1.29 and be 256 kbps. If you have already purchased EMI released songs, you can upgrade them for $.30 per song.

This is a great day for the music industry, and for consumers!

So it seems that Jobs had something going on when he posted that anti-DRM screed after all. Good for him. Though you get only so many points for seeing and working for the bleeding obvious, even despite all the industry pressure to maintain the illusion of a crisis.

Though, funny thing here–EMI is the RIAA, or at least part of it. It’ll be interesting to see if this is a rift, a break, or the start of an industry turnaround of sorts. After all, their lawsuits have been hitting snags as people start to fight back more and more.

Yeah, the fact EMI is part of the RIAA is what has me puzzled. Are they splitting from the organization? Is this a sign the RIAA is going to give up the fight? The next few months should be interesting to watch.
