First quiz in awhile

Saw this over at Jo’s Cafe:

What American accent do you have?

North Central. This is what everyone calls a “Minnesota accent.” If you saw “Fargo” or “Drop Dead Gorgeous” you probably didn’t think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Some Americans may mistake you for a Canadian.

Take this quiz now – it’s easy!

We’re going to start with “cot” and “caught.” When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

Um, yeah… no.

The questionnaire is very flawed. Until late in the quiz, I had no idea that vowel length was critical, after a few questions where in retrospect I think it was. Some of the questions required more detail, and furthermore, many of the distinctions were not ones that could easily be made, in particular by the people who are saying them.

It’s as if someone took some pronunciation keys without really understanding them well, had no experience in testing in real life, and then did a poor job making the test.

    I really don’t think that I have a Maine accent…

Have you ever lived in Maine? You might go there, hear them speak, and go “My people! I have found home!”

It was spot on for me as well. It came out as “Midland” (not be confused with “Midwest” which is a whole other kettle of fish) and that was just right for someone who grew up near Pittsburgh.
