Thoughts on the BlackBerry 8830

Written by  |  under Technology

Thoughts on the BlackBerry 8830So with two full days of playing with the BlackBerry 8830, what do I think?

I love it!

The battery life seems to drain a bit fast, but otherwise the phone is a dream to use.  And best of all, with my 7290, I was lucky if I got 1 bar of signal when standing next to the door of the warehouse, which was no where near my desk.  With the 8830, I’m getting 2 to 3 bars at my desk.  How, I have no idea, but I’m cetainly not going to argue with it.  No more going outside twice a day to check for texts!

The trackball is so much nicer to use than the  old trackwheel that used to be the standard on BlackBerry’s.  It makes navigation a breeze.

The full-color screen, use of ringtones, while old-hat to most, too bad, it’s new to me and I’m loving it.  Number 1 though has to be using it at my desk.  A dream come true for me.  I’ve been waiting years for a phone I could use all day.

Overall, a great little device, and I’m loving it.

For my carrier, we have no signal to amount to much in my office, but I found putting it next to my radio/XM antenna at my desk gives it a boost. As for the battery drain, check to see what you might still have open and not using. On my BB with the trackwheel, I would hold down the alt key and press the silver button under the trackwheel, like alt tabbing on a windows puter, and see what is still open. I tend to leave Google maps open at times and that will drain my battery faster. Just a thought.

I had left my Bluetooth open and running the first night. I turned it off and next to no power drain last night. Oops :-p

I have the 8800 on cingular. I would love to go to the Curve (mostly for the camera), but it does not have GPS. Is this one from Sprint have a camera? How about the service, I have heard besides T-mobile, Sprint has the 2nd worst service.

The 8830 does not have a camera, that’s a fairly new development for BlackBerrys. I’m quite happy with Sprint, but as with anything, mileage will vary.
