In Britain, the DVRs (actually called PVRs over here - Personal Video Recorders) have what is called "Actual Recording". The broadcasters send a signal between each programme to tell the PVR when to start/stop recording, so that you don't miss anything.

For example, last night's big BBC event was the live "Sports Personality Of The Year". It inevitably overran by a few minutes, with the programme after it scheduled to start at 2100. It actually started at 2104. My PVR started recording at 2104, when the BBC sent out the programme start signal.

The technology exists, so surely it's not a great leap for the American broadcasters to implement it?

Despairing - I have not heard of us having that in the USA, but that is EXACTLY what we need. As I am not the first person I have seen complaining about this same situation, I am going to guess that we don't have it, and that makes no sense to me. Thanks for letting us know!

This is exactly what CBS did to Jericho, in its first season. I have to wonder now, reading you post if CBS has been this ignorant for a long time. Great post.

I think CBS is a bunch of fools when it comes to this particular subject. You would think they had been in the business long enough to know how to run a network... apparently you would also be wrong if you thought this.
