It makes absolutely no sense to spend that much on a badge... NONE.

The Kansas City Police Department is celebrating its 135th anniversary in 2009 and to commemorate, they have made "retro" badges that will be in effect for 2009 along with the standard badge the officers wear. Getting the commemorative six point star badge was optional, but if you wanted it, it was $50 and the money came out of your own pocket. In Kansas City, if you have to replace your badge at any time, you have to pay for it yourself, unless you can prove that it wasn't your fault that it was lost or stolen. Not only that, they have to retire your badge number and you have to fill out tons of paperwork. I saw the news story on the St. Louis badges, too. I think it was pretty outrageous. I don't think badges are jewlery and I don't think that you should just have a couple dozen lying around or one that you only wear on 'special occasions'. They should have been able to get at least 200 badges with 10,000 bucks!

This is definitely a big issue here in St. Louis right now. No one is happy about it. My husband and his father are all up in arms about it... oddly enough my husband is one of those everyday accountants you speak of in this post and his father has a strong economic background.

Aw, look at Kansas City being all sensical. Kidding aside, their policies make a whole heck of a lot more sense than what St. Louis has done.
