Second I Am Legend Film Moving Ahead
It looks like a second film based on I Am Legend is coming our way sometime in the future.
Deadline is reporting that Warner Brothers has finalized deals with Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment to produce another installment based around I Am Legend. You’ll notice I’m avoiding the use of “sequel” here because Will Smith is supposed to reprise his role as Robert Neville, but he was very much dead at the end of the 2007 film. Naturally you would think this will be a prequel if he’s going to be in it, but there’s been no confirmation of that as of yet. Apparently Will Smith’s involvement is directly connected to final script approval, and that process is only just beginning.
The film didn’t exactly cry out for any more material to be released around it, but it ended up doing over $585 million in worldwide box office off of a $150 million budget, so naturally someone is going to want to go back to the well on this one.
I Am Legend was actually the third film to adapt the original 1954 novel by Richard Matheson of the same name, with the first two being The Last Man on Earth in 1964 and The Omega Man in 1971.
There is no word yet if the original director, Francis Lawrence, will return for this second film.
No release date or other information is available as of yet, but if this even comes to fruition, I would suspect 2015 when you factor in post production effects time.
