It appears that the 1978 comedy classic Animal House may be the next film to get the Broadway treatment. Apparently Universal Pictures Stage Production is working on the production with Casey Nicholaw from The Book of Mormon show set as the choreographer. Playwright Michael Mitnick is working on the script and the Barenaked Ladies will be providing the original score for the show.
While I’m not a huge fan of how Hollywood films are bieng turned into musicals left and right, I can oddly see this one working for some odd reason. Maybe it’s the 1962 setting, or the fact there are so many musical moments in the film, but I can’t say I’m totally opposed to this idea.
Of course, the biggest issue I see is how associated the original movie is with its cast. How in the world do you get anyone other than the late, great John Belushi to play Bluto? Anyone ho dons the “College” sweatshirt has some enormous shoes – and togas – to fill.
No cast, premiere date or venue has been announced for the production as of yet.
