My suspicions were correct: The Avengers 2 release is set for May 1, 2015.
I’ve suspected for some time now that The Avengers 2 would be released in May 2015, but that was finally confirmed this week. Once Joss Whedon signed with Marvel through June 2015, it seemed pretty much a done deal that the follow-up to the first Avengers had to fall within that time frame.
As it stands now, here is the release schedule for the next five Marvel films.
- Iron Man 3 – May 3, 2013
- Thor:The Dark World – November 15, 2013
- Captain America:The Winter Soldier – April 4, 2014
- Guardians of the Galaxy – August 1, 2014
- The Avengers 2 – May 1, 2015
Still up in the air is Ant-Man. Although the film has been announced, no release date has been thrown about as of yet. In theory, it could be dropped in somewhere between Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers 2 as that is a nine month span, and the longest gap in the schedule. The shortest gap is five months, so possibly January or February of 2015? It seems that Marvel/Disney no longer feels these films have to be released in the summer only, so that gives them a lot more freedom to move things around.
Any way you slice it, it looks like Marvel has achieved the dream of a cinematic universe for its characters that can sustain itself. The only question is, will audiences put up with this much content?
