Bates Motel, the new series from A&E based on Psycho, will be a modern day version of the story of Norman Bates.
Well, there goes a lot of my interest out the window.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is one of my all time favorite suspense/horror films of all times. And while I had some reservations about the idea of a prequel of how Norman came to be the way he is, I was going to give it a shot. To now learn that Bates Motel will be a modern day retelling of the story just really doesn’t intrigue me nearly as much. The fact that Carlton Cuse goes on in this video about how the series will deal with the dark side of the town the Bates’ family lives in killed even more of my interest.
Psycho is about one thing, and one thing only: Norman’s relationship with his mother. It is not about how the town is dark. It is not about some friends Norman had. It is about Norman and his overbearing mother that drove him insane and led to the ultimate example of an Oedipal complex.
If you want to work with a classic story, at least respect it, don’t completely change it and start producing what looks like glossy fan fiction.
