Dredd

Apparently it is officially time to give up hope on seeing a sequel to last year’s Dredd film.

Adi Shankar, one of the producers on Dredd, held an “I am a” session on Reddit last week and sadly shot down pretty much any hopes of getting a sequel to last year’s film. When asked about the reasons there couldn’t be a follow-up, Shankar said:

it’s because the movie totally bombed & R-rated movies are a tough sell to begin with.

On the one hand it’s refreshing to see someone involved in the film production process being so candid, but at the same time it sucks for those of us that were hoping for a follow up.

There is, however, some good news. Shankar produced a short film entitled Dirty Laundry that saw Thomas Jane returning to the role of the Punisher. He said that a short Dredd film is being worked on in the same vein, but he didn’t give any indication as to when it would be released, or who might star in it. Whatever it is, I’m sure I’ll watch it, I just would have preferred him on the big screen serving up justice in the mean streets of Mega City One.

Here’s Dirty Laundry to get a taste of what Shankar is discussing. Do be warned it has foul language and graphic violence.

David Tennant and Billie Piper

Fire up the TARDIS, folks. The 50th anniversary Doctor Who special is going to be a bumpy one.

It has been a long time since the Doctor Who series played with the concept of more than one incarnation of the Doctor running in to himself. The last time was in 2007 during a charity special when the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) met up with the 5th Doctor (Pater Davison), but it is unclear if that story counts as official. (check the video below if you’ve never seen it) So the last official team up would have been “The Two Doctors” in 1985 when the 6th Doctor (Colin Baker) encountered the 2nd Doctor (Patrick Troughton).

The BBC has officially announced that we’re going down this path in the 50th anniversary special which begins filming this week. David Tennant and Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) have been confirmed to meet Matt Smith (11th Doctor) and Jenna-Louise Coleman (Clara Oswold). Anyone who follows the series knows this is going to take some trickery. The last time we saw Rose she was in an alternate universe living out her life with a clone of the Doctor that was mortal. Supposedly that universe is closed off now and inaccessible, so either somehow the rift is going to reopen or we’re going to have an encounter set at some point during when the Doctor and Rose were traveling.

No matter how it works out, this is all fine with me. Tennant ranks in my top three Doctors (Tom Baker and Matt Smith being the other two) and Rose is my second favorite companion (number one being Karen Gillian as Amy Pond). So seeing these two back in the TARDIS isn’t going to break my heart in the least.

Doctor Who premiered on the BBC on Nov. 23, 1963, and it looks like all systems are go for the network to really acknowledge this momentous occasion. Besides the 50th anniversary special there will also be a TV movie entitled  An Adventure in Space and Time that will tell the story of the first episode (An Unearthly Child) and will star David Bradley  as William Hartnell, the first Doctor.

Pacific Rim is either going to be awesome or fail miserably. I can’t quite tell which way it’s going to swing yet.

There is no doubt that Guillermo del Toro is tapping in to just about every fan boy fantasy with his latest film, Pacific Rim. Giant monsters known as Kaiiju (Japanese for “strange beasts”) battling against gigantic humanoid robots? This sounds like every anime I have ever watched and every day dream I’ve ever had. I am completely on board with this project, but as we’ve seen time and time again, geeks being excited for a film doesn’t necessarily translate in to box office success.

I think the marketing department is well aware of this and they are trying to drum up as much excitement as they can. With that in mind, five posters were released this week featuring the different Jaegers, the name for the giant robots in the film. Enjoy, and let us all hope this film is as good as all the marketing is leading me to believe it will be.

The Iron Man 3 trailer showed off the fact Tony Stark has been busy tinkering in his lab, and now Marvel is giving us an advance look at some of the new armor suits.

While there are sure to be more names coming down the pike, Marvel announced six of the suit names this week on the film’s Facebook page along with nice shots of each. Since I highly doubt any of these were built as “practical” effects, don’t hold your breath to ever see any of them in real life at conventions.

Check out the names and close-ups, and then hit up the gallery for full body shots of each. All of them are awesome.

And before you scream, “this is an excuse to sell more toys!”… it is, but it’s also something that has long been established in the comics that Tony comes up with mission specific suits.

Nicola Peltz

Transformers 4 has its female lead. Say hello to Nicola Peltz.

Once again it appears that Michael Bay is more concerned with the humans in a Transformers film than the actual, you know, Transformers. The bombastic director took to his blog on Tuesday to announce the addition of Nicola Peltz to the cast. Interestingly enough the post had the headline of “Welcome Nicola Peltz to Transformers 4” and just a picture of an actress. Apparently Bay didn’t see any need to talk about her career or why she was a good choice?

Yeah, I’m not surprised either.

For those that are curious where you may have seen her before, she was in The Last Airbender as Katara and she is currently starring the Bates Motel TV series as Bardley.

Transformers 4 is due to unleash its stupidity on the world on June 27, 2014.

The Wolverine - Hugh Jackman

Lets be blunt, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was not a good movie. A shoddy plot, sub-par acting by most of the cast and just stupid continuity mistakes made for a not so enjoyable experience. Here’s hoping The Wolverine is better.

The second solo outing for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is based on one of the most stories ever for the character. If this is pulled off correctly, it wil be a major turning point for Wolverine through out the X-Men films, and it could be a chance for Jackman to really shine. (Not that anyone thinks he’s a bad actor, far from it.) This sequel is going to have to overcome the bad memories everyone has of the first solo movie, so I wish it nothing but luck in that uphill battle.

At least the domestic and international trailers hit on the same day for once.

The Wolverine hits theaters on July 26.

The international trailer takes a decidedly different bent than the Kick-Ass 2 red band trailer did when it comes to marketing the movie.

It seems that in some of the overseas markets that perhaps Kick-Ass 2 should actually be titled “Hit-Girl… with some other people in the movie as well.” There is no doubt that Hit-Girl, portrayed by Chloë Grace Moretz, was the breakout character of the first film, and that popularity is also obvious in the comic book form of the story as well, but this trailer goes a bit over the top. This story is still very much about Dave (Aaron Johnson) and his journey through the world of being a vigilante and the ramifications that come from that.

That being said… WOO! More Hit-Girl!

Kick-Ass 2 hits theaters in the U.S. on Aug. 16.

White House Down - Channing Tatum

Because if there is any rule in Hollywood, if one movie on a given subject is a good idea, two is a great idea.

With Olympus Has Fallen being a surprise hit at the box office this past weekend, it only makes sense you should release the trailer for White House Down. Starring Channing Tatum and directed Roland “My films don’t need a plot” Emmerich, this looks to be a hot topic at the box office.

If you’re thinking this is a coincidence that two films are coming out this close together with similar plots, it’s not. While Hollywood always tries to say it is, it just happens to often to not be a case of “hey, someone tried to sell me a script about X the other day, we should do something along those lines.” Remember the whole No Strings Attached/Friends With Benefits controversy? Yeah, total coincidence.

Either way, enjoy the latest from “Hey, I made Independence Day!” Emmerich.

Of all the characters in the Marvel universe, I would have never dreamed of seeing Batroc the Leaper on the big screen.

According to Latino Review, UFC Welterweight Champion, Georges St-Pierre will be joining Captain America: The Winter Soldier as none other than Batroc the Leaper. Before you laugh too hard – I admit the name is silly as all get out – here is a brief synopsis on him from Marvel’s site:

Batroc has no superhuman powers, but he is one of the most formidable unarmed combatants in the world. He has mastered numerous martial arts and is perhaps the world’s leading master of savate, the French art of foot-fighting. He is an accomplished thief and smuggler with extensive military training.

My guess is he won’t be a main villain, but a henchman for someone else should this rumor even prove to be true. Latino Review has a pretty solid track record on these types of leaks, however.

Let us just hope they don’t go for the full character name as I don’t think anyone wants hysterical fits of laughter in the theater. You can take a gander at his costume below… I imagine this will also change.

The Croods - still

Dreamworks Animation will be doing a happy dance today as it is seeing some success at the box office this weekend.

The Croods came in first this weekend with a healthy $44.7 million domestic box office take and an additional $63.3 million overseas. Dreamworks Animation has been on the rocks for a while since Rise of the Guardians flopped and it needed a hit, so this is good news. It had a $135 million dollar budget so it still has some ways to go to earn its budget back.

Coming in second was Olympus Has Fallen with $30.5 million. With Gerard Butler in the lead, I didn’t expect much from this since he tanked two of the biggest flops of 2012, but apparently the mixture of a good cast and the idea of the White House being taken over worked for movie goers.

Third place went to Oz the Great and Powerful that took in another $22 million to bring its domestic total to $177.5 million off of a $215 million dollar budget. It has taken in $178.8 million overseas, so it currently stands at $356.3 million globally. It isn’t going to hit $1 billion like Alice in Wonderland did, but it’s going to do okay.

The Call landed in fourth place with a 49.2 percent slide from last weekend to bring in $8.7 million and bring its domestic total to $30.9 million off of a $13 million dollar budget.

Rounding out the top five was the new Tina Fey/Paul Rudd romcom, Admission. It took in $6.4 million off of a $13 million dollar budget, but there is nothing to crow about here. Spring Breakers took sixth with $5 million with right around half as many screens and a $2 million dollar budget. Admission is in bad shape to be sure.

Elsewhere on the chart, The Incredible Burt Wondersone slipped 58 percent to bring in $4.2 million and land in seventh. This one is heading to the dog pile for sure with only $17.3 million so far off of a $30 million dollar budget. And Jack the Giant Slayer is still trailing John Carter with $2.96 million this weekend to bring it up to only $59 million domestic off of a $195 million dollar budget. You have to wonder if Fox execs are sweating yet bringing him back on the X-Men franchise.

Next week sees the release of G.I. Joe Retaliation, Marriage Counselor and The Host.

Curious how I think these new films will do? Check out my first quarter films of 2013 predictions.

Green Lantern banner

It is now clear to me that no one involved with the Green Lantern movie had any clue what was going on.

Speaking with Empire, Ryan Reynolds spoke about his eagerness, or lack thereof, to put the power ring back on as the protector of sector 2814. ”It’s just that… working on Green Lantern, I saw how difficult it is to make that concept palatable, and how confused it all can be when you don’t really know exactly where you’re going with it or you don’t really know how to access that world properly – that world comic book fans have been accessing for decades and falling in love with,” Reynolds said. “So at this point I have very little interest in joining that kind of world. But, you know, a great script and a good director can always turn that around.”

I’m sorry, but what? The concept of Green Lantern is pretty straight forward, it is not that the concept isn’t palatable, it’s that you had a horrible script. After finally seeing the movie I started writing a post about what all went wrong with it, and it was so bad that I finally abandoned it because I couldn’t possibly nail down everything the filmmakers got wrong at the basic storytelling level.

“If you’re going to do comic book movies in that vein, you really have to get them right,” Reynolds told Empire. “I believe that Joss Whedon is the guy that just nails it and Christopher Nolan obviously nails it. So if they were gonna do it like that, it would be an interesting thing to do.”

And now Reynolds essentially throws the director of Green Lantern – Martin Campbell – under the bus. Here’s a news flash, Reynolds… you agreed to be in the movie. Did you not read the script? Did you not see the gigantic plot holes in the story? The unnecessary characters? The complete lack of character motivations and the insanely broad strokes your own character was painted with? At the end of the day you still signed a contract to appear in the movie, and it is my hope that if someone like Whedon or Nolan ever decided to tackle this rich and deep story, they would have the good sense to not bring you back.

“Palatable.” Really? Take some acting classes and maybe you could be “palatable.”

Could legendary actor Robert Redford be joining Captain America: The Winter Soldier? It sure looks like it.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Redford is in talks with Marvel to join the upcoming second Captain America, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. According to the report he would be playing a senior executive in the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization.

As a life long fan of comics, I always have to pinch myself that not only am I getting movies of my favorite characters, but then sequels as well. Add in now legendary actors being willing to take parts in those films, it definitely says something for the legitimacy of the genre.

Sir Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3? Robert Redford in a Captain America movie? Has the world turned upside down?
