I don’t know if I’m more surprised by the return of Lucas Black to the Fast & Furious franchise, or the fact his contract calls for three more of these films.
Lucas Black has only appeared in one Fast & Furious film, the third installment entitled Tokyo Drift. This was actually the least successful entry in the series to date, but it appears that Fast & Furious 6 ended in such a way that showed it was actually a fairly important entry in the overall series. Deadline is now reporting that Black will return to the role of Sean Boswell in Fast & Furious 7… and Fast & Furious 8… and Fast & Furious 9.
Honestly, I don’t know why I’m surprised that the series is being planned this far out. Starting with the fourth film, Fast & Furious, each successive film has become the top grossing film with the last film, Fast & Furious 6, bringing in $788.7 million globally off of a $160 million dollar budget. At this point these films are just printing money. Even if interest dies off over these next three films, it’s going to take a lot of work for them to stop being profitable.
Apparently the next three films are going to be another trilogy story arc – I use that term lightly – and Black will be an important part of the overall story.
