CBS Orders a How I Met Your Mother Spinoff Pilot

When How I Met Your Mother ends this season, CBS isn’t quite ready to give up on the concept quite yet.

A pitch was made on Oct. 30 for a spinoff series called How I Met Your Dad, and CBS has already ordered a pilot. In TV terms this is a whirlwind. The series is being spearheaded by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and along with Up All Night creator/exec producer Emily Spivey.

The new series will focus on a whole new set of friends and narrator and has no connection to the storylines of How I Met Your Mother. The only connecting thread between the two series will be the inclusion of  MacLaren’s Pub, which is TV talk for, “Well, that’s one less set we have to build.”

I’m not quite sure why they opted to change the style of the title from “Mother” to “Dad,” but I don’t think it reads as well. It’s a small thing, but it does seem an odd choice.

While this is only a pilot order, my guess is we’ll see this go to series in the 2014/2015 season.
