There will be one less mutant in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past – Anna Paquin’s Rogue has been left on the cutting room floor.
It is inevitable that when a film makes it to the editing room that some scenes will be cut. It’s normally not a big deal, but when a fan favorite character is part of that scene, and it turns out to be her only cameo moment in the entire picture, it makes a difference. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Bryan Singer explained what happened with the scene:
Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous. It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.
Singer was quick to point out that this was in no way a reflection on the work Paquin had turned in. “She did a fantastic job. She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.” He went on to add that he had already informed her of the decision, “She completely understood,” he said. “It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.”
Honestly, I’m not surprised someone ended up getting cut, I’m just sorry it was Rogue as she has always been one of my favorite characters. Considering the number of X-Men in this film, it had to happen at some point, especially those that had smaller roles.
X-Men: Days of Future Past will hit theaters on May 23, 2014.
