When does a TV cast get too big? buff.ly/2NnI0Oz
The remake of Escape From New York is still in play, and it’s looking like there may be a large change to the premise of the 1980s action classic.
Silver Pictures is reportedly still trying to get the remake of Escape From New York off the ground, and while the coveted role of Snake Plissken is apparently still up for grabs, rumor is that it will be more team based this time.
Starlog – there’s a name I haven’t thought of in years – spoke with a source that proved their closeness to the project and they provided the site with a synopsis of who will be working with Plissken this time in the city-turned-prison.
Plissken’s team consists of Mina, a warzone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the President’s security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken’s former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery.
While Plissken did work with Cabbie, Brain and Maggie in the original film, it was very much his story. With the addition of at least one more character in the form of Gareth, who will have the worn out story tool of “a dangerous secret,” you can already see things are changing.
This is one of those projects that is a perfect example of why remakes don’t need to happen. The original film still stands up today, there is absolutely no reason for this to be remade. Kurt Russell was the perfect Snake Plissken, and the idea of anyone else donning the eye patch just seems wrong to me. Adding in more characters and changing the dynamic of the film seems even more wrong.
Supposedly Silver Pictures is already in the process of having design artwork doen, but a part of me hopes that this still falls apart at some point and we never have to deal with it.
