J.J. Abrams may be done directing Star Wars movies for the moment, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what’s going to happen.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour this week in support of his new Showtime series Roadies, Abrams was asked if Rey (Daisy Ridley) is a Skywalker or Kenobi as theories circulate about both possibilities. “Obviously, it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian’s (Johnson) story to continue now and the last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy,” Abrams said. Of course, that hasn’t stopped Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow from addressing it somewhat when speaking with recently.
I’ve seen all of the theories… What I do know is that we’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying, because Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens but in the entire galaxy, and she deserves it. So we’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was—it’s something that happened a long time ago [in a galaxy] far, far away, we’re just telling you what happened.
Apparently Abrams can keep quiet, but not necessarily Trevorrow.
As to the recent quotes from Greg Grunberg about Abrams regretting not directing Episode VIII, Abrams had some laughs. “Here’s the thing about Greg,” the director said while laughing. “You put a microphone in front of him and you never know what you’re going to get. I love my friend Greg, he’s been my best friend since kindergarten and I think that my enthusiasm for VIII is enormous. I think he also might have invented a couple of the quotes that he gave.”
Well at least that has been cleared up.
The takeaway here is that Rey is indeed someone in the greater story of Star Wars and not just some random Force user. (Not that I ever thought otherwise) And we will indeed learn her backstory, but it is definitely a question of when that will happen.
My money is still on Jar Jar Binks being her dad. I’m just putting that out there now.
