In a not too shocking announcement, it looks like everyone’s favorite wookie will appear in the Han Solo film.
As we begin to roll out the Star Wars Story films, second up will be a film focusing on the younger years of Han Solo before we meet him in the Cantina in A New Hope. The assumption has been for some time that the obvious story would be to tell how Han met his first mate Chewbacca and why this wookie has stuck with him for decades when he obviously gets frustrated with the Correllian smuggler quite often.
Speaking at the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference, Disney CEO Bob Iger pretty much confirmed this is what we’ll see:
Rogue One … is about a band of rebels plotting to steal the plans to the Death Star. It takes place right before George Lucas‘s first film, which came out in 1977 and is now called ‘The New Hope.’
We have others in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewy. And that’ll come after ‘Star Wars 8’ in 2018. And then there will possibly more thereafter.
Lets face it, this was a given. What other story would you even think about doing when it comes to a younger Han Solo?
In the old Expanded Universe – now referred to as ‘Legends’ – the story went that Chewie was a slave of the Empire as many wookies were, and Han freed him causing Chewie to owe Han a ‘Life Debt’ that meant he would follow him for as long as he lived. This clearly expanded to the rest of his friends and families over the course of the films, and explains why Chewie flys off with Rey at the end of The Force Awakens. Now we will finally see this on film, although there are sure to be some changes.
The Han Solo film is currently scheduled for some time in May 2018, although I suspect that is going to change to December of that year.
