James Cameron expands Avatar series to five films

James Cameron has announced that he now has four sequels planned to Avatar.

During the Fox presentation at CinemaCon, James Cameron took to the stage to announce that his plans for three sequels to Avatar has now expanded to four. “We began to bump up against the limitations for our art form,” Cameron said while explaining why he had decided he would need another installment to tell the whole story.

Folks, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, this is a horrible plan. Avatar was not a good movie and despite it being the highest grossing film of all time it was done on the back of the visual spectacle it presented, not the story. It is also not turned into a cultural touchstone like Star Wars or James Bond have. When I talk with fellow sci-fi or film fans I have been hard pressed to find anyone that is just dying to return to the world of Pandora.

Cameron is his own greatest fan, and this plan of his pretty much cements that.

Avatar 2 is targeted for Christmas 2018 with subsequent films following in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
