Is Black Widow finally going to get her own film? It seems that door is very much open at the moment.
Since her introduction in Iron Man 2 people have been asking when we would see Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow get her own film. There has been a lot of lip service from Marvel about it, but now there appears to be something a bit more concrete. Speaking with Deadline, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige seemed optimistic we would finally see one in a few years.
We’ve announced the next nine movies, 10 counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow.
We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise.
This makes a lot of sense to me. Johansson has appeared in a ton of the Marvel films now, and when Phase 4 rolls around the studio will need a familiar face. The contracts will have expired with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor). There will be a need for someone we are already familiar with, and Black Widow could fill that void.
As she has no super powers it could be easy to dismiss her film as potentially being boring, but I think if it was to be handled as a James Bond/Jason Bourne style spy thriller, it could actually be a ton of fun. Johansson has proven her action chops as Widow and in Lucy, and Marvel has shown it likes exploring other genres, so why not go that route.
The unfortunate part is having to wait until 2020 before we even have a shot at this happening, but I think it will be worth the wait.
