The weekend wasn’t as soft as last year, but franchises did not fare well.
X-Men Apocalypse took the top spot this weekend with $65M, approximately $30M less than the opening of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Combined with its foreign haul of $185.8M so far for a total of $250.83M off of a $178M budget.
Alice Through the Looking Glass took in $28.1M to come in second and well below all of the projections. It could be Johnny Depp’s current personal issues, or it could be no one was that interested in a follow-up. It has taken in $65M overseas so far for a total of $93.11M off of its $170M budget.
Dipping 51 percent, The Angry Birds Movie took in $18.7M to land in third place for a new domestic total of $66.35M and a global total of $223.55M off of a $73M budget.
Fourth place went to Captain America: Civil War with $15.13M and a new domestic haul of $372.61M and globally $1.1B off of a $250M budget.
Rounding out the top five was Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising with $0.1M and a new total of $38.33M. It is over $50M behind the original at the same point in its run.
Next weekend’s big releases are Me Before You, Popstar and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
