Russo Brothers aiming for TV remake of The Warriors

The Warriors may be heading to the small screen… can you dig it?

According to a report from Deadline, cult classic film The Warriors may be heading to Hulu as a television series. This could go horribly wrong. Oh, what’s that? The Russo Brothers, the men behind the last two Captain America movies, are spearheading this?

I’m in. I’m so in.

If you aren’t familiar with The Warriors, this trailer will give you the basics of what you need to know.

Cyrus, leader of the Gramercy Riffs, called a meeting of all the major New York gangs and tried to issue a citywide truce that would see them team up to overthrow the police and rule the city. Cyrus is shot and killed and The Warriors are framed for it and then must work their way back to their home territory in Coney Island for safety. Along the way they encounter gangs such as The Furies who are after the bounty that has now been placed on them.

Does this movie sound awesome? It should, because it is. It was released in 1979 and is one of those wacky 70s movies that just made you go “This is odd and awesome all at once.” Tony Scott was attached to remake the film some years ago, but apparently he wanted to remove some of the odd gangs like The Furies and The Hi-hats, which would have removed so much of the charm of the film.

There is no news on what exactly the TV series will cover or how many episodes it would be. My guess is it could start before the events of the film and show us some of what led to Cyrus calling the intergang meeting and of course we could have longer periods with each gang as The Warriors work their way home. The only gang that got an extended scene was the all girl Lizzies. Can we get some more time with The Hi-hats? They’re a gang of mimes… A GANG OF MIMES! Why do they exist? I need to know this.

If you’ve never seen the movie, it’s currently streaming on Netflix and you must watch it. And then hope this TV series happens.
