Secret Life of Pets tops Ghostbusters at the box office

They may not be afraid of no ghosts, but clearly they needed to fear pets.

The Secret Life of Pets held on to the top of the box office this weekend with an impressive $50.56M for a new doemstic total of $203.14M off of a $75M budget. I expect to hear sequel talk any day now.

Second place went to Ghostbusters with $46M, coming in slightly under the projections of $50M. The test here will be to see what sort of legs it has in the coming weeks.

The Legend of Tarzan is still swinging through the box office to land in third place with $11.12M for a new total of $103M. Globally it sits at $193.65M off of a $180M budget.

Finding Dory took in $11M for a new domestic total of $445.5M, making it the highest grossing animated film ever domestically. Globally it stands $721.7M.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates landed in fifth place with $7.5M and a new total of $31.32M off of a $33M budget.

Next weekend’s big releases are Ice Age: Collision Course, Lights Out and Star Trek Beyond.

Curious how I think these films will do? Check out my The Movies of 2016 – 3nd Quarter report.
