Disney has turned into a monster at the box office, and it just seems to be gaining more momentum.
2015 saw Walt Disney Pictures bring in an impressive $5.84B at the box office, its best year ever. As of Nov. 1 the studio has already brought in $5.85B.
Disney reached this cumulative total with Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia and Finding Dory having all crossed the $1B mark at the box office. Jungle Book brought in a further $966M and Star Wars: The Force Awakens added $736M as the majority of its run was in the first quarter of the year.
Disney still has two major releases coming out this year with Moana and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so the coffers will only grow with a full two months left to go before the end of the year. Add in that Doctor Strange is already out in some foreign markets and performing well and this number is easily going to come close to $6.5B.
The only question is if Disney can keep this train rolling. Shareholders are not known for accepting why a studio is down year over year no matter how good one year was. Next year will be expected to be even higher and you have to wonder if any studio is capable of those types of numbers.
