CBS has clearly run out of ideas as it is now looking at rebooting the classic 1950s series, The Honeymooners.
The Hollywood Reporter reported on Thursday that CBS is putting a Honeymooners reboot into development. Bob Kushell, who worked on ABC’s reboot of The Muppets, is penning the pilot episode which will focus on two married couples as the original series did, but with the twist that one of them divorced four years ago and have now remarried.
This ranks high on the list of bad ideas. Networks are going this route to try to grab attention for their content as there are now nearly 500 scripted series in production. By going with a known property it will elevate the series immediately as they won’t have to educate audiences, but going for a classic such as this is just going to backfire. The Honeymooners, which still very watchable, were a product of their time. Anything made today will just share a name with the original, but not its DNA.
This is just one of many reboots currently in development at various networks. Others currently in the works include are Car Wash (ABC), Sneakers (NBC), Enemy of the State (ABC), Dynasty (The CW), War of the Worlds (MTV), Magnum P.I. (ABC), The Lost Boys (CW), Varsity Blues (CMT), The Departed (Amazon), Let the Right One In (TNT) and L.A. Law, and so on.
Be prepared folks, this isn’t the last of this style of reboot we hear about.
