For the three people who doubted it would happen, James Gunn has confirmed there will be a third Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Speaking with Complex, Guardians of the Galaxy mastermind James Gunn has confirmed there will be a third film in the series.
There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.
Lets be clear here, a third film will happen without question, the only real question is whether or not James Gunn will head it up. My guess is he will. Marvel would be crazy to change the formula at this point with how the numbers are tracking on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this far out from release.
Gunn also addressed the involvement of the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War, and that he is keeping an eye on how they are portrayed.
You know listen, I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.
I’m an Executive Producer on Infinity War. I’ve been working hard with the Russo brothers, with the Marvel guys, with Kevin Feige, to make sure that any of the characters that I’m involved with, that are in that movie are well taken care of and are as funny as they should be, and is are as honest and truthful as they should be. So I’ve been dealing with them all the time. I’ve been talking to the actors on set every single day as we go through production, and it’s been a great experience so far.
I think that gives you a pretty clear idea of how integral Marvel views Gunn’s involvement with these characters. Infinity War isn’t his movie and yet they are allowing him to have input on how they come across. That isn’t exactly normal, although the film itself is rather unusual.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 arrives in theaters on May 5, and Avengers: Ifinity War follows a year later on May 4, 2018.
