Joss Whedon circling Batgirl film at Warner Brothers

The DC Extended Universe may be getting another vigilante in the form of Batgirl.

According to Variety, Joss Whedon may be leaving his Marvel roots in the rear view mirror to produce, write and direct a Batgirl solo film. The film would also feature appearances by other well-known residents of Gotham City, but it is unknown which ones it would be at this time.

After Avengers received such positive accolades, Avengers: Age of Ultron did not, and Whedon stepped away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said in a few interviews that he planned to return to television, but now it seems he may be pivoting to Warner Brothers and its struggling DCEU.

Whedon is best known for Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, so he is certainly no stranger to writing with a strong female lead, and this seems right up his alley. The big question is which incarnation of Batgirl he would use. Even if he goes with the best-known Barbara Gordon version, there are multiple iterations of her as well. This would be the easiest road to go down, but there are few other women to have donned the cowl over the years that he could opt for.

With Gotham City Sirens in development, and The Batman currently undergoing a page one rewrite, it certainly seems like Gotham City is the lynchpin of the DCEU.

I’m all for this project. I love Whedon’s work, and I think Batgirl doesn’t get nearly enough attention, so I’m on board.
