Pirates sails to the top of the box office

There’s still some life into sailing the high seas.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tails took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $62.17M. With a $230M budget that may sound dismal, but it has taken in $208.4M overseas for a global total of $270.57M.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came in second with $19.89M for a new domestic total of $333.20M and a global total of $783.3M off of a $200M budget. I thought it was going to join the billion dollar club, but clearly I was wrong.

Third place went to Baywatch which washed up on the shore with a dismal $18.1M off of a $69M budget. It appears Dwayne Johnson can’t star in just anything.

Alien: Covenant took a massive 70.9 percent hit to take in $10.52M for a new domestic total of $57.34M. Globally it sits at $143.58M off of a $97M budget.

Everything, Everything rounded out the top five with $6.18M for a new domestic total of $21.54M off of a $10M budget.

This week will see Captain Underpants and Wonder Woman hit theaters.

Curious how I think these films will do? Check out my The Movies of 2017 – 2nd Quarter report.
