Things may be about to get interesting over at Sony when it comes to Spider-Man.
Currently the deal that brought Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe runs through Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. This is what allowed him to appear in Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. However, there may be trouble on the horizon.
Speaking with Allo Ciné, Holland revealed that there are currently three films planned.
Yes, there is what we call the arc of the character. There is still a lot of room for Peter Parker and Spider-Man, especially, to grow in the next two movies. He’s definitely not the finished article by the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming and I really look forward to exploring the different ways he can grow up and… go through puberty I guess. It’s going to be an exciting couple of movies.
When asked to clarify, he said:
There will be a Spider-Man 2 and 3… Yeah, well now you know, sorry Marvel. Whoops!
What does this mean for the third film? Will it not be part of the MCU? Will Sony try going it alone on the conclusion to a trilogy after this version of Spidey has been firmly established as part of the MCU? I’m sure the contract can be extended, but I wouldn’t push this past Sony and some of the other odd decisions it makes.
Only time will tell, but things could be getting messy.
