With Ben Affleck having stepped down from directing The Batman, it seems his script has now gone with him.
MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast had Matt Reeves on to promote War for the Planet of the Apes, and of course, the topic of The Batman came up as it’s his next project. Reeves was asked if he would be working from Affleck and Geoff Johns script to which he replied,“No. It’s a new story. It’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool.”
This is not unusual or surprising. The rumor had been circulating for some time, plus when a new director comes on to a project it is standard operating procedure to also retool the playbook. Reeves has said he wants to go for more of a noir detective story – something I have already expressed my utmost support for – and that pretty much guaranteed a new script.
The big question now is what will happen to Joe Manganiello as he had already been cast as Deathstroke. He was perfectly cast in this role, I’m hoping they can find some way to still work him into the DC Extended Universe.
The Batman currently doesn’t have a firm release date, but one has to imagine even a tentative one has been pushed back to allow time for the new script to be written.
