For the second time this summer, a stunt performer has lost their life on set.
On Tuesday it was reported that a female stunt performer lost her life on the set of Deadpool 2 while performing a motorcycle shot. Details of the accident are sparse, but, to be honest, that’s fine. No matter how it happened, it sadly happened.
Earlier this summer, stuntman John Bernecker lost his life on the set of The Walking Dead when he missed the crash bag for a planned fall.
Back in the 1980s when I first really got into movies I became entranced by a video about the making of Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was about an hour long and detailed some of the famous stunts from that film such as the truck stunt with Indy underneath, or the German Wing fight. That was where I really learned what stunt people do and the immense amount of planning that goes into performing these spectacles.
While I still see the occasional tidbit here or there about what stunt performers do, they are some of the most overlooked artists in film and television. These people literally put their lives on the line for our entertainment. And while I would agree they are well compensated, it is clear that isn’t enough when we’ve lost two so close together.
All I ask is next time you’re watching anything with a stunt in it, which is basically anything these days, take a second in your mind to thank these people. They deserve it.
