What does the world not need? A Joker origin movie. Too bad we’re getting one.
According to Deadline, Warner Brothers is setting up an origin film for the Joker. Yes, the Batman’s arch-nemesis. According to the report, Todd Phillips (The Hangover) is set to co-write and possibly direct along with Scott Silver (8 Mile) to help out on script duties.
So far things sound normal… then it gets weird.
Apparently, Martin Scorsese is in talks to produce. And the tone of the film is said to be in the vein of 1980’s Scorsese films.
Not weird enough yet?
It’s not part of the DC Extended Universe.
That’s right, Warner Brothers has gone through all the trouble of setting up a cinematic universe and now it wants to do films that aren’t in that continuity. Because that won’t be confusing to audiences at all. Jared Leto is said to be set to appear as the Joker in Gotham City Sirens and Suicide Squad 2, meanwhile there will be a Joker origin movie going on with a different Joker.
Here. I got you some aspirin.
And the last part: No one wants a Joker origin story. Part of why this character works so well is no one knows where he comes from, what motivates him or anything else. There have been several origin stories over the years, and that’s because he keeps changing it. Down on his luck comedian. Wanna be bank robber etc etc etc. Not knowing who the Joker is and hearing his ever changing origins is part of what makes him who he is.
Don’t do this, Warner Brothers. There is no level at which this is a good idea.
