You know when I think of the classic X-Men sub-team The New Mutants, the first thing that pops into my head is ‘haunted house.’
Okay… something isn’t right here.
When it was first announced that the New Mutants would be getting their own movie, I was excited as they were one of my favorite X-Men sub-teams. They were complex, uncertain teenagers just learning to control their abilities. As the movie was taking shape we kept hearing it was a mixture of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and a haunted house story, and I started scratching my head.
Now the trailer is here and… okay, this is going to be odd.
Here are the mutants shown in the trailer.
I’ll say this, there are definitely hints to their back stories here. We see Sam in a coal mine which is where he first saw his powers manifest. We see Illyana as a young girl, which… I’m not sure if they’re going to follow her origin. In the comics she was kidnapped by a demon named Belasco and taken to the Limbo dimension where she spent years (time works differently there) becoming a sorceress. We see Danielle having her dreams. There’s a lot of key points here, but the setting is just odd.
I’ll still give this a shot, but with some definite trepidations.
The New Mutants will hit theaters on April 12, 2018.
