CBS is happy enough with Star Trek: Discovery that it has already ordered a second season.
“In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise,” said Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer, CBS Interactive. “This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the ‘Star Trek’ legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.”
I’m still deciding my feelings on Discovery. I’m a few episodes behind, but it’s enjoyable so far, but where it will land int he overall pantheon of the various offshoots of the property remains to be seen. I’m an oddball in most circles because I’m a hardcore Deep Space Nine supporter. Voyager was a trainwreck, and I don’t think I ever finished the first season of Enterprise. The Next Generation is probably in third place for me. And the Original series… well, yeah. Of course it’s in first place.
If you honestly look at the overall Star Trek history, it’s a bit of a mess. At least with Discovery, some new things are being tried, for instance, the series not focusing on a captain. And for once, the shady side of Starfleet isn’t just some rogue admiral, it goes deeper this time.
I’m giving the show some time, and I’m glad to see CBS will be as well.
