Lord of the Rings TV rights being shopped around

Ready for the television version of Lord of the Rings? Well, you should be.

Deadline is reporting that the J.R.R. Tolkien estate is taking meetings with Amazon, HBO and Netflix currently about a possible television version of the famous works. Some industry insiders are calling the potential deal “insane.”

Well, are you sitting down? The Tolkien estate is looking for $200 to $250 million for the rights. THat’s just the rights, no production costs. Adding more fun to the concept? The rights apparently do not encompass all the characters and are limited.

In other words, this may be a half-baked version of the series of novels in a world where we already have films for all of them.

Production on a fantasy series like this runs around $100 to $150 million per season, so you would be looking at upwards of $400 million to see if this would even work.

Can we just pass on this and move on? Please?
