Red Sonja, queen of the most impractical battle armor in history, is heading back to the big screen as quickly as possible.
According to Deadline, Millennium Media is fast-tracking a new big screen take on Red Sonja. The film will be produced by Millennium’s Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta alongside Cinelou’s Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon. Lerner said of the news, “We have been waiting for the right time for this remake, and with the success of Wonder Woman, the audience has spoken. They want female heroes.”
Play her smart and this could work, but they need to tread carefully here. Sword and sorcery movies are notoriously tricky to get right, so while fast is fine, just make sure you get it right.
First appearing in Marvel Comics in 1973 as a creation of Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor Smith, Red Sonja was based on a creation of Robert E. Howard’s, Red Sonya of Rogatino. The character first appeared in a Conan short story in 1934 entitled “The Shadow of the Vulture.” She also shared some characteristics with another Howard character, Dark Agnes de Chastillon.
Sonja made her feature film debut in the self-titled 1985 film starring Brigitte Nielsen. The film also starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, but due to licensing issues, he could not be called Conan.
