It seems there will be two Captain Marvels in the upcoming movie.
According to Variety, Jude Law has joined the cast of Captain Marvel in the role of Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell. Marvel Studios had no comment on the news.
Let me fill some of you in, Carol Danvers – who will be played by Brie Larson in the film – is the second character to use the moniker of Captain Marvel. The first was Doctor Walter Lawson who was actually a spy for the alien race the Kree. After he helped the humans a few too many times he was sentenced to death for treason, but escaped and returned to Earth where he became a full-time hero. Apparently, in the film he will serve as a mentor to Danvers as she begins to learn her powers.
This is extra intriguing as it has already been revealed that the Skrull alien race will appear in the movie, and the Kree-Skrull wars have been the motivation of many story arcs in the comics.
With the film set in the 1990s, my guess is we’re going to find out by the end of the film that someone in the MCU has been a shape-shifting Skrull all along. As Captain Marvel hits theaters between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 on March 8, 2019, I’m thinking the fourth team film will be dealing with this news.
Now to see how the Kree fit into all this. Last time we saw them on the big screen was in Guardians of the Galaxy.
