It seems that the Alien franchise may be dead for the moment at Fox.
This tidbit needs a general helping of salt with it, but someone claiming to have worked on Alien: Covenant has posted on the forums at Blu-Ray.com saying that Fox has pulled the plug on Alien: Awakening.
The sequel to Covenant was originally due to start preproduction this month in Sydney. After the box office results filming was canceled, and a warehouse storage unit full of stuff was auctioned off a few months ago. So the original plan of pumping out another quickly has definitely changed with no immediate plans for anything.
If true, this isn’t a surprise. The film had a budget of $97M and only did $74.26M domestic and $166.48M foreign for a total of $240.74M. While it potentially made a profit, it wasn’t much of one.
Ridley Scott has said that he wants to do at least one more prequel, but with the way audiences have reacted to Prometheus and the follow-up, it seems audiences are not on board for this ride.
As someone who has loved the franchise from the start, I think it’s time we just took a rest from it. The number of bad films outnumbers the good ones. It just doesn’t need to keep going at this point. And with the possibility of Disney taking over Fox, lets just call it a day and walk away for now.
