Gambit loses another director and New Mutants moves back 10 months

It was not a good day in the Fox X-Men film universe.

Thursday was a weird day for Fox. But let us begin with the good news. Deadpool 2 moved its release up by two weeks to May 18 meaning it now opens a week before Solo: A Star Wars Story.

From here on out, though, Fox did not have a good day.

Gore Verbinski has exited the director’s chair on the long-gestating Gambit. This film starring Channing Tatum was due to go before the lenses soon, but that is now delayed and the release date has moved from Feb. 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019 to accommodate. At this point… just kill this film. It is clearly cursed as it has lost multiple directors and gone through so many scripts.

The other bit of news is Fox pushed back The New Mutants even though the marketing campaign had started. Originally slated for an April 13 release, it has now been pushed back a full 10 months to Feb. 22, 2019. According to well-known film leaker Umberto Gonzalez, it’s because the film was deemed to not be scary enough.

If true, this says to me that reshoots are in the cards, now it’s just a question of when those will happen.

What I find intriguing here is the release dates of Gambit and New Mutants now fall within the potential closure daters of the Disney/Fox deal. When that was announced in Dec. it was said the deal would close in 12 to 18 months. Gambit was already in that window, but now the new team film is as well. Something about this just feels… odd to me.

Additionally, all of the buzz from folks on the internet has been around New Mutants, so moving it back 10 months this close to release just is making things not add up for me. Something is off in this entire shuffling. Someday, somehow, it will all come out.
