CBS is apparently where no original ideas are no longer needed.
Variety is reporting that four drama pilots have been ordered, and amongst them is a new take on James Ellroy’s novel, L.A. Confidential. The book was made into a film in 1997 starring Kim Basinger and tells the tale of an actresses life intersecting with police detectives hunting a serial killer in 1950s Los Angeles.
CBS is saying it’s a “modern take,” but it isn’t clear if that means the setting has shifted out of the 50s. Jordan Harper is writing and will also be executive producing with Arnon Milchan.
The other three dramas are, thankfully, new material, but that doesn’t change the fact this is the same network currently working on a revival of Murphy Brown as well as reboots of Magnum P.I. and Cagney & Lacey. It would seem CBS has decided that the best path for it is to just use old ideas over and over again.
