Star Wars announces new movies from the pair behind Game of Thrones

We’re going to be getting Star Wars movies for the rest of our lives it would seem.

Lucasfilm announced on Tuesday that it has hired David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the pair behind Game of Thrones, to lead a new ‘series’ of Star Wars films. I put series in quotes as there was no indication as to how many films are in the deal. All we really know at this point is that these films will be separate from the Skywalker saga or Rian Johnson’s upcoming trilogy of films.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

There is no indication to release dates, number of films, time period they will be set in… nothing. So… yay? My guess is this will be a counterpoint to Johnson’s films meaning Johnson film one year, then Benioff/Weiss film the next. I think this will end up replacing the “A Star Wars Story” films.

There is a lot of potential ground in the timeline that can be covered, but I like the idea of a series just for the reason we can get to know these characters as opposed to them just being thrown away after two hours.

Star Wars is coming for the rest of our lives, folks.
