New Gods look set to join the DC Extended Universe

In a move that will leave die-hard comic fans going “Really?” DC is looking to add the New Gods to the DC Extended Universe.

Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time) is set to direct a film version of Jack Kirby’s New Gods which will be part of the DC Extended Universe of films. While Kirby is unquestionably one of the greatest comic creators to ever live, the New Gods are… well… odd.

Residing on a planet called New Genesis, the New Gods are the relatives of Darkseid and his troops on Apokolips. If that already sounds familiar, Steppenwolf – who appeared in Justice League – is one of Darkseid’s troops. All of that is fine, but where it gets weird is when you see the New Gods have names like Big Barda, Mister Miracle, Highfather and so on. It is an odd assortmant of characters to say the least.

While this would open up many new stories for the DCEU, it is also going to be one of the hardest to sell to general audiences. It’s just not that accessible.

No word yet on a release date, and the hunt is just now starting for a writer.
