After 27 years, it appears that Ted Theodore Logan and Bill S. Preston Esq. are finally going to return to their time traveling ways.
Following years of rumors, a third film in the Bill & Ted series has finally been officially announced. Entitled Bill & Ted Face the Music, the new film will see both Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return to their iconic slacker roles they first played in 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
The new film will see the title characters having settled into their lives and being weighed down by middle age and family commitments. Although they were told long ago that they would be responsible for the greatest song ever written, they have still yet to accomplish their destiny. Now, time and spece is tearing apart around them and a visitor from the future tells them only their song can save life as we know it. They will then set off on a new adventure with their daughters, historical figures, and some musical legends.
Bill & Ted Face the Music will be written by the original creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, while Dean Parisot will direct. The film is currently in pre-production with no release date yet announced.
The first movies was a ton of fun, the second film – Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey from 1991 – is watchable, but not great. Not even juding by the quality of the second film, the stories were very much a product of the time. While it may be fun to check back in with these characters, it does feel like the moment has passed.
The Gen X slacker period is long gone, and the world is a very different place these days. One has to assume that both characters have some form of jobs now, and that will take a way a lot of the listless humor of the first two movies.
I’m not beruding checking back in here, but I also feel a lot of people are going to discover that their memories are a lot sweeter than the reality.
