If you enjoyed Logan it stands to reason you will probably end up enjoying the upcoming Boba Fett movie. According to a new report, James Mangold has been tapped to write and direct the film based on the bounty hunter.
The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive report that Lucasfilm has signed Mangold to write and direct the long-gestating Boba Fett film. He is best known for his work on Logan, but also has credits on Walk the Line, Knight and Day and 3:10 to Yuma. He’s well versed at action and stories that go deep into a character, and that is just what Boba Fett needs.
The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series fleshed out Boba Fett quite a bit, but in the films, he is still an enigma. There is no argument he has always been cool looking, but there was absolutely nothing there to give him any depth. George Lucas tried correcting this in Episode II – Attack of the Clones, but it wasn’t met with a lot of love by fans.
Boba Fett set a precedent in the Star Wars fan scene where every cool looking character immediately has a fan base, and they rarely turn into anything that exciting.
The new report indicated that Boba Fett is just one of the character films in development. Lucasfilm is reportedly working on several films and an Obi-Wan Kenobi film is amongst them. Supposedly Lucasfilm is in talks with Stephen Daldry to direct, but there is still no script at this time.
Combined with multiple trilogies in development it sounds to me like Star Wars is indeed turning into Marvel. The main difference is we will have trilogies and stand-alones and that could lead to confusion. Hopefully some sort of system is being created to help everyone keep this straight, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
As far as characters go, I’ve never really cared for Boba Fett, but I do trust Mangold. Color me excited from that angle.
