The Predator trailer has left me absolutely cold. Is it just a badly cut trailer? It doesn’t appear so. It seems the story is just insanely flawed.
A story about the Predators should be about the easiest thing in the world to do. Big, scary alien hunts and kills some humans, some human outsmarts them. That’s it. That’s all we need.
Nope. We need to throw in a genetically enhanced Predator! And a kid! A kid will help people relate to this story! And make sure the kid is precious and running around with some Predator tech!
Here is the description from the studio.
From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
Maybe I should just give up on trailers. I think I’ve just watched too many over the years, or they are just being cut worse and worse. Too much is given away in them. I can tell you, probably pretty accurately, every beat of this film now. I won’t do it here as I don’t want to potentially spoile anyone, but I can guarantee you I have figured most of it out.
And beyond the trailer… just make smarter movies. Shane Black is a good filmmaker, he’s better than this. I have no desire to watch Predator on Predator violence when one of them is just something humans messed with. I’m good, really.
It is beyond me how Fox keeps messing this franchise up. It couldn’t be simpler if you tried.
The Predator hits theaters on Sept. 14.
