The Sopranos prequel film is moving forward, but I’m still puzzled why we even need it. Hasn’t the time passed?
Ever since The Sopranos went off the air on HBO, there has been talk of a prequel. Now it appears that the film is moving forward. Entitled The Many Saints of Newark, Alan Taylor has been named to direct. Amongst his credits are nine episodes of the original series, so he clearly understands the look and feel of the original series. He even won an Emmy for the episode “Kennedy and Heidi,” so he knows his stuff. He went on to direct Thor: The Dark World, Terminator Genisys, and Game of Thrones.
The film is due to cover the Newark riots of the 1960s when tensions were high between African Americans and the Italian Americans. With this in mind, this story will probably cover Johnny and Junior when they were the head of the Sopranos crew and what actions they took. Tony would be fairly young at that time, so don’t expect him to figure in a large way.
No release date has been announced for the film yet.
