Amazon has found its writing team for the Lord of the Rings prequel series, and that concerns me a bit.
At the summer meeting of The Critics Association (TCA), Amazon announced that it has hired newcomers JD Payne and Patrick McKay to showrun and develop its upcoming Lord of the Rings series. Payne and McKay just wrote the upcoming Jungle Cruise and Star Trek 4, but have no TV experience as of yet.
Normally I would say, “Good for them, I wish them luck!” but also, normally there aren’t hundreds of millions of dollars riding on their shoulders. Some estimates are putting this series at $500M after rights and production costs.
Everyone needs to get their start somewhere, but with a project this big? It just seems like a recipe for disaster to me.
Of course… it doesn’t help I don’t think this show should exist, but what do I know.
