Netflix has announced that it has acquired the rights to C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia for movies as well as a series.
Oh good… we’re going to try this again.
There have been multiple adaptations of the first book – The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe – and a few have gone beyond that into the other books, and what everyone learns is… they aren’t great. The first book is a lot of fun, and after that they are a slog.
It would be foolish to not see this as a response to Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series. Meanwhile, HBO is working on Game of Thrones spinoffs. It appears that we are heading into a fantasy series war between the various cable networks and streaming outlets. Everyone is going to need a sword and sorcery fantasy series, and it seems the battle lines have been drawn.
The problem for Netflix is it went for name recognition and not quality. Narnia is just freaking boring.
Oh well, it’s Netflix. They will announce another 15 series in a week and we’ll forget it is even working on this project until it shows up on the home page of our account.
