Star Wars The Mandalorian May Be a Testing Ground

Lucasfilm showed off the first official image from Star Wars: The Mandalorian as well as announcing several big names coming on board to direct episodes.

Folks… this is an audition.

Star Wars has had a run of issues with directors. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story needed reshoots. Solo: A Star Wars Story needed a new director in the middle of production. Colin Trevorrow was fired from Episode IX before anything even happened.

There is a very definite problem in the land of Star Wars with directors.

Who is coming to The Mandalorian? Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) will be handling duties on the first episode. This is a big job for any series as it means he will be responsible for setting the overall tone of the series and making style choices for those that follow. From there, some of the other directors coming in will include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).

Nothing beyond that was said, but this sure feels like an audition process. “Here, come make an hour of TV for us, lets see how we gel, and if we can work together, maybe there is a movie in your future.”

Mark my words, this is the plan, and I’m fine with it. Lets get some big names in there.
