At a town hall meeting on the Fox lot on Wednesday, the executives finally announced a date for the closing of the Disney deal to acquire 21st Century Fox: January 1, 2019.
We’ve known for ages it would be some time in 2019, but it had always been assumed to have been later in the year by at least a few months. Now we’re only about 10 weeks out from what will form the largest media company in the world.
While some aren’t excited at this merging, I’m super intrigued to see how it will play out. I have had a lot of issues with Fox over the years for mishandling of franchises (The X-Men are a muddled mess), to locking properties in the vaults for far too long. The TV properties alone are going to feed Hulu for years, which Disney will now have controlling interest in post-merger.
Is this the best thing for competition? I’m not sure. Personally, I don’t see much problem due to the number of other studios, but I also admit I’m biased here. I want the vaults thrown wide, and that is exactly what Disney will need to do to make up for the expenditure on Fox.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out, but I’m here for it.
